During a solo exhibition at the Atlas Center at the University of Colorado, Jen Lewin introduced the Moths. The three, soft interactive robotic forms are charged to movement by human connection. Moths are a participatory art piece; only by stopping and connecting physically do they come to life. The longer one stays, the longer the moth will continue to move even when the viewer leaves. Moths speak to light, to community, to gathering, and have an open ethereal dream like quality that will gracefully dance and glow in space.

Created in 2012 by American contemporary installation artist, Jen Lewin, Chandelier Harp installed in Nur-Sultan, Kazakhstan for the Astana Arts Festival. This brought the Chandelier Harp to Central Asia for the first time.
Chandelier Harp is an interactive instrument played by passing your body through the low voltage lasers that shine from the Chandelier Harp to the ground. Much like plucking the string of a harp, passing through the beams triggers custom circuitry and sensors to produce musical notes. Users play to create an ambiance that is individual to the moment of interaction. When crowds flock to it and people start to play independently, the group’s chaotic activity give the piece life, as if everyone is, unknowingly, participating in a musical symphony. Each ‘string’ will mix its own library of sounds to create a depth and tone that compliments the public activity and random or organized play.

Reflect, by Jen Lewin, is an immersive, multi-sensory experience that takes inspiration from the dynamic patterns created by organic systems found in nature. Spanning 2,400 square feet, the sculpture consists of three concentric rings, each made up of interactive platforms that respond to visitors’ steps, triggering splashes of light that create an ever-changing composition. The installation will encourage New Yorkers to pause for a moment of reflection and discovery, and inspire connection as the city enters a new era of hope and revival.
Domino Park is the first exhibition venue that will display Reflect in the United States. Created as a part of the larger 15,000 square foot work Cosmos, Reflect was first featured in Tokyo over the spring and summer of 2020. During the day, Reflect’s glossy dichroic surface mirrors the sky and surrounding environment, creating a surreal space and eliciting a profoundly connective experience. At night, the sculpture animates and glows as viewers move across its ever-changing illuminated panels, powered by complex code and hardware, all custom developed by the artist.
Reflect at Domino Park allows for multiple individuals to engage with the work simultaneously, while maintaining six feet of social distance, making it an ideal public artwork for this moment.
Reflect is free and open to the public March 5 – April 15, 2021. The immersive exhibit is open to park visitors between 8 a.m. EST and 10 p.m. EST every day.

Internationally renowned NYC based artist Jen Lewin will bring her interactive light landscape, The Pool, to Industry City. Built in 2008, The Pool invites visitors to walk, dance, jump and play along the field of concentric circles. By entering The Pool, you enter a world where play and collaborative movement create swirling effects of light and color. Imagine a giant canvas where you can paint and splash light collaboratively.
Inspired by Australian tidal pools, Lewin developed technology and code in order to bring this experience around the world. Using mesh-network technology and custom code, visitors can activate platforms that respond to touch—encouraging participation in an ever-changing composition.
The Pool is part of Lewin’s “Have Art, Will Travel” program, traveling to over sixty exhibition venues in more than twenty countries in the past thirteen years, including: Abu Dhabi, Beijing, Hong Kong, Istanbul, Jerusalem, Lisbon, Los Angeles, Mexico City, New York City, Prague, Shanghai, Sydney, and Taipei.
The Pool will be at Industry City starting January 28, 2022 until March 28, 2022. The piece will be open from 3pm-9pm everyday in the courtyard between Buildings 1 & 2 and is free to the public.

Created in 2017, Jen Lewin’s unique, interactive sculpture Aqueous installed at the Bahrain Light Festival during the Winter of 2018. This was the second time a sculpture created by Jen Lewin was invited to participate in this exhibition. Like all of Lewin’s work Aqueous brings an unprecedented level of interactivity, transforming the way we interact with Art and each other.
Each installation of Aqueous is entirely site specific, allowing for completely unique installations anywhere in the world. Composed of hundreds of interactive, stand alone, modular platforms derived directly from the Golden Ratio, Aqueous grows to create a landscape of flowing modular light, controlled not from a single computer, router, or graphic system, but instead from the raw code that can process human interaction on each of Aqueous’s many independent yet connected platforms.

THE LAST OCEAN, created by American contemporary artist, Jen Lewin, explores the crisis of plastic pollution in our oceans, a warming planet, dwindling natural resources, and the need for aggressive systemic change. How do we address and mitigate the issues our planet faces as a global community?
Lewin’s previous work combines the beauty of the natural world alongside the transformative possibilities of human interactivity and the power of technology, creating community through connection. The Last Ocean aims to expand on this body of work, encapsulating the expansive uniqueness of our oceans, and the fragility of these immense bodies of water. Composed of over 300 interactive platforms and created from reclaimed and recycled ocean plastic, The Last Ocean is an immersive experience created using Lewin’s unique in-house mesh network LED technology.
During the day, the platforms of The Last Ocean will highlight the transformation of reclaimed ocean plastic with a swirled surface of blue and white particulate.
At night, The Last Ocean will glow with vibrant animated light, cycling through a diverse palette of carefully curated colors as visitors interact with the work. Participants will splash and dance in waves of light, illuminating the organic and powerful nature of our oceans.
Each installation of The Last Ocean will be unique, with site specific installations slowly dissipating as the piece is exhibited, conveying the idea of this fragile ecosystem deteriorating over time.
The Last Ocean will premiere at Burning Man 2022, as part of the Burning Man Honoraria

Atlas was meticulously crafted by hand at our studio in Brooklyn, New York, showcasing an intricate blend of art, science, and technology. The hand-bent aluminum frames form the foundation of this work, while the graphics were developed using research on endangered species. Scientific images were used to train an AI model, generating high-definition graphic versions of these moths. These visuals were further refined in Adobe Suite to achieve the precise colors and patterns desired. The designs were UV-printed on durable materials and then enhanced with hand-painted UV-reactive pigments, bringing each piece to life. Once completed, the components were carefully assembled and rigorously tested in the studio. Hundreds of unique soundscapes, created by Jen Lewin, accompany each species, allowing viewers to trigger dynamic sound and light interactions as they walk beneath them. The colors were designed to harmonize with the surrounding environment, while the soundscapes seamlessly integrate with one another, creating a symphonic experience that connects each element of the installation.

Launched in 2020 during the pandemic, the award-winning Lights on Stratford annual winter festival will once again transform Stratford’s heritage downtown core and park system with luminous art and interactive light installations.
The Lights on Stratford 2022/23 theme is REKINDLE – “relight (a fire) or revive (something that has been lost).” As we emerge from another year of having to stay home, missing our friends, family and favourite places, the importance of rekindling a sense of joy, wonder and community has never been greater.
Market Square will be brought to life with internationally renowned artist Jen Lewin’s The Pool – a giant field of concentric circles that swirl with light when activated by touch. Inspired by Australian tidal pools, Lewin developed mesh network technology and code to bring this experience around the world. Visitors can activate any of the 100 large circular pads that respond to walking, dancing, jumping, or playing – encouraging participation in ever-changing composition.

Illuminate Adelaide’s free, city-wide centrepiece returns with a new series of immersive installations, artworks and large-scale activations set to turn Adelaide’s most iconic streetscapes into a night-time playground of colour and sound.
The Pool and Chandelier Harp will be joining the roster of boundary-pushing local and international artists to reimagine the laneways, street-fronts and open spaces through the three key North, East and West precincts.
Bringing together highly mathematical principles of music theory, Jen Lewin’s Chandelier Harp invites visitors to create literal music through the movements of their body. Visit Chandelier Harp at Queens Theatre, Playhouse Ln & Gilles Arcade. By dancing beneath the harp’s unique series of laser sensors, participants can work collaboratively to play this interactive instrument fit with retro synthesizers to generate truly harmonious melodies.
Merging the movements of individuals to create an overlapping and everchanging collage of light, The Pool is a giant field of concentric circles that swirl with colour when activated by touch. Inspired by Australian tidal rock pools, The Pool uses cutting edge mesh-network technology and custom code to bring this vivid and ever-changing composition to life. Visit The Pool on the North Terrace of the South Australian Museum.
Free for all ages and running nightly from 6pm to 11pm.

Existing at the intersection of art and technology, The Aurora is a 29-foot-tall, 720-pound experiential sculpture in which both human interaction and weather patterns create swirling displays of color and light. The title references the Aurora Borealis, or Northern Lights—naturally occurring light phenomena visible in the northern sky during the fall and winter months. Inspired by the beauty and complexity of these organic light forms, Jen Lewin programmed The Aurora to change color based on the live weather in Minneapolis. Below the sculpture, eight interactive platforms respond to touch, encouraging visitors to actively participate in an ever-changing composition. Uniting nature, humanity, and technology, Lewin’s work underscores the dynamic interplay between people and the environment.

Flow is the first work that combines Lewin’s Flux and Magical Harp series, integrating light and sound components into a single sculpture designed for the ‘Iolani School. Composed of twenty-four interactive light tubes, this interactive instrument swirls with light and plays ethereal musical tones when participants move beneath its laser sensors. Triggering a certain tube changes the overall color palette and tonal range of the sculpture, adding elements of surprise and discovery to the artwork.

The Magical Bridge Playground is a world-renowned concept developed first in Palo Alto. Designed to be socially inclusive for children and adults of varying physical and cognitive abilities, Magical Bridge Redwood City aims to go beyond typical playground designs, which often inadvertently overlook the growing autistic population, cognitively challenged, visually and hearing impaired, physically limited and the aging population. The Magical Bridge Foundation will collaborate with Redwood City on its second location due to its progressive parks and recreation program, financial generosity, and diverse community.

The Tulsa Cloud at Gathering Place consists of six glass orbs made of welded metal rings with thousands of interactive LEDs attached. Built using over 2,100 custom glass bulbs with hand-embedded RGB pixel LEDs and heat-sensing technology, it twinkles and shifts as participants move underneath it. The bulbs take the shape of Thomas Edison’s incandescent light bulb, which went out of production in the USA in 2012. Bringing together an old-fashioned aesthetic with high-tech electronics, it creates an interactive experience where people can control the shapes seen in the clouds with their movements.

The Sidewalk Harp is played by passing your body through the 36 sensors capped with LEDs along the bottom of the 40-foot long stainless steel form. Much like plucking the string of a harp, passing through the sensors triggers custom circuitry and sensors to produce musical notes and LED colors. As the community gathers and plays together, they create a symphony of color that washes over the urban landscape. This act of engagement with others is just as much part of the art as the sculpture is itself.

For several years, working together and separately, Jen Lewin and Bill Goodrich carried a shared vision for a workspace that could allow for creative, focused work, but that would also provide the energy and inspiration of a community of other dedicated, passionate people. After years of working with a small team from her home studio, Jen needed to grow and spread out. With that impetus, she and Bill partnered to create The Studio (Boulder) as both a new home for Jen Lewin Studio and as a space for a wide range of other creative entrepreneurs, freelancers, and professionals. Since opening the doors to The Studio on January 1, 2014 the space has grown into one of the most vibrant and dynamic professional communities in Boulder.

Phronesis is a dynamic illuminated site-specific sculpture created for the Cincinnati Public Library. In this work, Jen Lewin looks both into the past and the future. Inspired by the research of Dr. Stephen Bertman, a professor of Languages, Literature, and Cultures at the University of Windsor in Canada, Lewin crafted eight large illuminated sculptures, each representing a guiding principle of ancient Greek wisdom: Humanism, The Pursuit of Excellence, The Practice of Moderation, Self-Knowledge, Rationalism, Restless Curiosity, The Love of Freedom, and Individualism. These principles and their ancient roots remind us of the vast breadth of human knowledge, curiosity, and history, much of which is preserved and shared through the Library.

Based on the dimensions of the golden ratio, Jen Lewin developed HELIX, a series of twenty-four spires laid out in the form of a nautilus shell, twisting upward. When you interact with this work, it creates an immersive environment that almost seems to envelop you in flames of rainbow light. We see the golden ratio all around us in nature—from the nautilus shell, to the petals of a lily, spiral galaxies, hurricane patterns, and even the ratios of human faces. Artists have used this mathematical principle throughout art history, and its proportions were mathematically approximated by the Italian mathematician known as Fibonacci. Lewin is interested in this form because it demonstrates how math prevails throughout the natural and built worlds, and how we as humans are drawn to the beauty found within our environments, and ourselves.

In music and dance, “andante” refers to a slow tempo, or gradual, fluid motions. Bringing together highly mathematical principles of music theory, the tones are based loosely on a pentatonic scale, which is often found in traditional Chinese music and sounds as if it shifts fluidly between major and minor tonalities. Multiple layers of sound allow for both range and depth depending on the speed with which you move beneath each sensor. This scale seems to ebb and flow like the shape of ANDANTE or the leap of a dancer—connecting your motions to your auditory, tactile, and visual senses. Similarly, the shape of the sculpture is derived from a musical staff in which each light tube becomes a bar of music.
