Cyclicality, 2025

Washington Pavilion: Sioux Falls, South Dakota

[sai·kluh·ka·luh·tee] [noun]: the quality or state of recurring in cycles; rhythmic repetition.

Cyclicality is an interactive light sculpture composed of 11 illuminated, reflective crystal forms inspired by the natural beauty of Sioux Quartzite. Created as a site-specific artwork by Jen Lewin, the piece invites viewers to explore the flow of color and light through touch and proximity.

Three interactive pedestals allow participants to transform the installation—shifting color palettes, the animation speed, and the rhythm of light. Drawing from the ever-changing landscape of Sioux Falls, Cyclicality reflects the region’s geologic story of erosion, transformation, renewal, and enduring natural wonder.

Crafted with Dichroic panels, the eleven crystals range in height from 11 to 21 feet. During the day, Cyclicality captures and reflects its natural surroundings and the sunlight, casting dynamic light shadows across the landscape. Its semi-transparent mirrors reveal fragments of quartzite stone within each crystal shape.

When night falls, Cyclicality transforms into an immersive display of vibrant, interactive colors. As infinity mirrors, each crystal projects an endless interplay of light and rock, creating the illusion of an infinite spatial depth.
