Myco, 2024
Downtown Doral Pocket Park: Doral, Florida
Myco is an interactive collection of mushroom drums inspired by the interconnected communication of fungi. Installed in Downtown Doral, Florida, the work transforms the park into an illuminated, percussive landscape that explores the symbiotic relationships within fungal networks.
Created from recycled and upcycled plastic sourced from Jen Lewin’s 2008 installation Pool, each Myco cap lights up and resonates in harmony when touched. The sculpture invites participants to play collaboratively, reflecting the organic exchange and interdependence found in nature’s mycorrhizal systems.
Derived from Mycology—the branch of biology devoted to the study of fungi, their taxonomy, genetics, and symbiotic roles—Myco draws inspiration from the mutualistic bond between fungi and plant roots.
By day, the sculpture functions as a series of interactive drum sets, each mushroom producing a distinct tone that allows for an orchestra of sound across its clusters. At night, Myco comes alive through illuminated interactivity, merging touch, sound, and light into a unified sensory experience.
Through its geometric forms and responsive design, the sculpture connects individuals of all ages in play, sound, and light, illuminating the unseen networks that bind all living things.
